PC W7 64 bit ....
Trying to connect a new camera (Canon G16) via USB lead
If I plug camera into PC ... nothing happens initially (other than usual USB 'ding') then after about 30 sec get "USB device not recognized"

Plugging camera straight into USB on a W7 Laptop .. it comes up in My Computer fine (no software installation needed) - proves camera & USB lead.

Plug direct into this PC and I get "Device not recognized" when I click on error msg (Windows) shows as 'unknown device' resolution offered is that it asks me to install driver for device, which I don't have.

Raised tkt with Canon ... but they say it's a PC issue, they don't produce a driver it is 'built in' on W7.
Tried on both USB 2 & 3 ... and porst work fine for other devices.

update
Removed all USB drivers with 'DriveCleanUp' ... rebooted, connected camera ... same as before Device not Recognized ..

The Device manager view is shown below .... under propertise the Device h/w shows as USB\ASMEDIAUSBD_Hub&VID_040E&PID_0100&REV_0000

Device instance path shows as:
USB\VID_040E&PID_0100&ASMEDIAUSBD_HUB\5&BAF7EE9&0&0

However not sure if it is getting this form camera or this is default 'unknown'

As it works fine on other W7 devices ... its as if Driver is missing (yet none installed on any other PC, W7 recognizes and installs appropriate driver itself)

All ... resolved the issue :)

.... it was as I first thought the driver was missing.
I plugged camera back into Laptop where it works - it loads driver ... WPdMtpDR.dll
This is Microsoft's Portable Media Device Module

I did a search on-line found a copy of it, checked and it was not on my PC, so dropped it into the folder:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\

Plugged in camera and straight away detected as G16 put icon in 'my computer' and also opened up window giving options to up[load pictures etc.

So appears as fixed .....

Posted in case useful for others.

Oooops - premature

Although it worked once .. it would not work a second time.
Rebooted PC ... same back to unrecognised device
Reinstalled copy of WPdMtpDR.dll again .. no change.

Back to you guys for help ..... can it be reverse engineered from working Laptop ?
