So I recently ran into this error when switching computers cases. The new case (Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-05 CC-9011138-WW) I got has usb 3.0 connector while my motherboard (MSI B85M - P33) which only has two usb 2.0 connectors. So I got a usb 3.0 male to female usb 2.0 adapter and I am still running into this error is it because I am only using one of the 2.0 ports or could there be another cause?

It could a BIOS issue, USB devices drawing more power than available, faulty front USB ports or faulty adapter.

To avoid damage to your motherboard, I suggest you get USB 3.0 PCI-e card with a 19-pin connector like this one. That way you will be able to properly connect the front USB 3.0 ports from the Corsair Carbide case.
