So I have a Dell S2716DG monitor headed my way, which will be plugged into my gaming rig via Displayport, and one of the features I'm excited about is having a dedicated secondary HDMI input that I plan on plugging my MacBook into. My question is: will my Macbook detect devices (namely my Steinberg UR 22) connected onto the display's USB hub over the HDMI connection alone? Or does it need to be connected via USB as well? Basically I would like to continue to use my monitor speakers plugged into the UR 22 for gaming and be able to switch to music recording/ production on the Mac without having to manually switch plugs, because who has time for that!? 😛

Just curious, if I don't hear anything I'll post my findings when the monitor arrives!

Solution
I had a pair of HP monitors with 4 USB ports, and they needed a USB cable to the monitor as well.
Just think of it as another USB hub.

There will be a USB IN port, which will enable the 4 x USB 3.0 ports on the monitor.
