Regularly I'll get the USB disconnected sound and then anything from 1 min to 30 mins later I usually get the USB connected sound.

If I'm playing a game at the time when I get the USB disconnected sound, the game runs terrible with games which usually reach 60fps with plenty of GPU power to spare, bouncing between 30-60 fps even on quite static screens.

I've removed all USB devices and I've just got my microphone, keyboard and mouse plugged in but when the USB disconnect sound occurs, all these devices still work.

I've disabled USB3 in the BIOS, I run a USBDeView which records the last time USB devices are connected/disconnected nothing is matching up with when I get the disconnect sound and performance drop.

The only thing I can think of is a driver issue somewhere, or some system component on the motherboard is starting to fail as the main part of the computer is 7 years old.

Basic setup

i5 2500k
ASUS p8P68 LE motherboard
16GB Corsair Vengence PC3-10700H
MSI GTX1070
Samsung 850EVO 500GB SSD

That's basically what's in my computer.

Internally I have 2 SSD, 2 HDD, graphics card and a USB3 card. However when the USB disconnect sound occurs, devices plugged in to this USB3 card still function normally.

I could try removing this card to see if it makes a difference.

Hmm I disconnected some USB ports attached to the motherboard and it seems to be working fine now.

To me this means the following.
The USB / controller for those ports is failing.
The USB ports/connectors are faulty and causing issues.
My PSU is reaching capacity.

In my computer I upgraded the CPU and could no longer connect certain usb devices, I think this is because I never reinstalled windows. If you upgraded any parts (specifically the CPU or motherboard) recently I would suggest you reinstall Windows

The computer hasn't been touched for years. The last thing was the GTX1070 which was nearly 2 years now.

I seemed to have resolved the issue for now, I've removed/disabled some of the additional USB2 ports on the board and it's stopped happening.

Thanks for your suggestion
