USB mouse frequently experiences a momentary shutdown on my laptop. It freezes, and if the mouse button was being held when it malfunctioned, it continues to be held until the mouse recovers.
It experiences occasional stutter/slowing as well.
Sometimes it doesn't recover, giving me the "USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" dialogue box, and forces me to replug the mouse.

The problem has only just risen up in the past week.
I have not tried any other kind of USB device, just mice.

-I have tested all USB ports, they all experience the same problem
-I have tested 2 mice, both experience the same problem
-I have tried re-installing several drivers several times to no avail.
-I have disabled any USB-disabling feature, be it in device manager or power saving plans, to no avail
-I have tried removing all power from the laptop and let it sit, to no avail
And much more...

My laptop did experience a fall 6+ months ago, not resulting in any apparent issues.

I am running Windows 8 64-bit on an ASUS K55VD laptop
