USB hangs/disconnects during large transfers

Reading online, I guess a while back Win7x64 had some issues with large file transfers and nVidia USB controllers... the symptoms seem the same but no luck fixing.

I have an ASUS P5Q-e board (Intel P45) and I never had this issue before, then noticed the issue about a month ago. Few months ago I switched from an ATI video card to an nVidia, but not seeing how that would be a factor.

Some USB devices seems to start transferring fast, then slow to a crawl (usb sticks) and right now, I'm trying to clean off my MP3 player and dump a bunch of files back on and not even half way I get told the device has disconnected and resuming won't work. I have an external drive as well (Fantom 1TB) with it's own power supply and started having some issues with that as well... transfers will (after a few minutes) drop in speed dramatically and crawl along.

Again, it seems like the issue listed here, but, my system is Intel, plus all updates install which should include that fix since been a part of updates since 2010.

Any ideas?

EDIT - Also should mention, I have a generic USB PCI card plugged in, and in the case of the MP3 player, when plugged into the USB PCI card, it doesn't seem to be disconnecting. I was barely 20% done plugged into the onboard USB when it disconnects, plugged into the card worked no problems
