So I have been using MSI Afterburner for awhile, and back in December I got a pop up asking if i wanted to download MSI Live. I went ahead and downloaded it to see if I had any driver updates I needed. At this point all my USB ports worked, but it said I had a USB driver to download so I went ahead and installed it.

I started having some issues with my xbox controller in one of my front ports, randomly disconnects and reconnects while playing racing games caused mucho rage mode which lead me to try other ports and it kept happening.

Tried my joystick out with Star Citizen and it started having same issues (joystick was plugged in back port). Figured it was the driver that caused it so i uninstalled (still rage induced).

This is where it all went wrong, now out of six front ports, two dont work at all. The remaining four, if I connect the xbox controller, the xbox symbol that lights up does a very low constant... shimmer i would say is the best word to describe it, and the computer wont even recognize its plugged in. If i hit a button it shuts off.

Out of the remaining six ports on back, two wont even turn the controller on, and the remaining four are being used and work fine, but if i disconnect my mouse or keyboard and plug back in, it won't recognize them from anywhere between 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

Device Manager used to have USB Controller with an issue, but now all it says is "Other Devices - Unknown device" with an issue. Not sure if its related but Programmable Root Enumerator (have 2 in device manager) 1 is fine, 1 has an issue.

TL;DR - Drivers downloaded, installed, screwed up ports, uninstalled, broke more, Device manager has 2 issues 🙁

6 Back Usb - 4 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0 - 2 USB 3.0 Dead
6 Front USB - 4 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0 - All dead

Setup:
P8Z77-V LK
i5-3570k OC 4.4ghz
16gb DDR3 1600
GTX 980sli

--quick edit--
i did install and uninstall all drivers in safe mode, just figured i'd through that out there

Hey, I had similar issues when a bad PSU fried out part of my motherboard.
Does BIOS of your motherboard support mouse?

If it does, then plug in mouse into those non-working ports and enter BIOS.
If the mouse works, then it is drivers issue.
If not, then most likely it is motherboard issue.

I'll try both these solutions as soon as i get home, thank you guys for the responses. Hope they work because its making me very sad lol. Dont think it's the PSU though as everything was working perfectly until i used MSI Live to update drivers, but i will test this to make sure it isnt the PSU then download the drivers smorizio posted.

Just to make sure as well, i should install all those drivers in safe mode correct? or does it matter?

So i booted into BIOS, all ports worked fine with my mouse. Restarted into safe mode and tried installing the new drivers, Asus ones wouldnt let me in safe mode. Intel ones installed fine and i actually have a "USB Controller" listed in device manager, and it got rid of the unknown device in the manager. Rebooted, installed Asus ones and installed fine no errors.

None of the ports were fixed.

Now no matter if i try in safe mode or regular, the MEI file will not install.

I also still have the Programmable root enumerator with an issue in device manager (no idea if this is related or not)

It sounds like all of your ports are fine, just drivers issue.
If I were you I would reinstall the system or uninstall all of the drivers and hardware applications.
Then install necessary drivers from the original dvd.

i'm afraid if i uninstall all the drivers all my usb ports will die then i wont be able to do anything, uninstalling and installing a driver is what started all this in the first place. since nothing else has worked i guess i'm just going to live with these 4 ports.
