I have an Dell optiPlex 3040 and I installed encryption software on it with a preboot login (wingMagic SecureDoc v5) I know the username and password. Now during the software setup the wizard asks to create a pre boot password which I did. The software requires you to restart the machine to complete the setup of this. Now when I have rebooted the keyboard and mouse does not allow me to type in my credentials at the preboot login screen. Since the machine does not have an old style keyboard port and only relies on USB devices I can't input anything.

The weird thing is if I press f12 straight away at system startup the keyboard works. Is I'm in startup or bios settings it works but soon as the preboot login screen loads the numlock light goes out and the keyboard doesn't work

Make sure any setting in your bios is fully enabling the keyboard. some say USB keyboard support some just say usb boot detections (fast or full) should be set to full. you might even have to disable fast boot for the usb devices to be fully supported. each bios is uniqe so I cannot say what exact setting it would be on your system.
