USB on dimension 4100 98SE???

I have acquired a second-hand Dimension 4100 from a friend. Having
reinstalled from the system recovery disk I still needed to download a few
drivers, but all seems ok now and there is nothing amiss in Device Manager.

However when I insert my USB Memory in to the USB port on the back it
detects the hardware but cannot find the driver.

Motherboard is and Intel D815EEA. I have looked for drivers but can't find
anything on the Dell or Intel site.

Any ideas please.

Instead of going through all this frustration, and ending up with an
obsolete USB 1.0 port, why not do like I did and go down to Wal-Mart
and spend 30-bucks on a USB 2.0 card that has the drivers you need
included.

Did you install the Intel .inf chipset drivers for the board
(support.dell.com, enter service tag number, choose downloads, then chipset
utility)?

If memory serves me correctly, the USB drivers are not installed
automatically. They are on the Win98SE CD and must be installed manually.

I think so - I have tried so much now!!!
I will check and get back.

At the moment on inserting the memory it detects a 'composite usb device'
but cannot find a driver.
I point it at c:\dell\drivers\ but can't recall where that folder came
from, also a few others after downloads from Intel - sorry not much help
really!!

Just checked - yes I had downloaded and installed the chipset drivers.
The device in question is a Dell 128MB Memory Stick - one of those that goes
on a key ring.
Should I have a driver with that?

That is the CD. Dell doesn't have "product recovery disks".

It label says "Dell (tm) Product Recovery CD".

On inspection it does contain CAB files will I had not appreciated, so
thanks for that.

Which won't help.

For Windows 98, you need the drivers for the KEY. It should have come with
them.

I don't understand. The Belkin 5-port USB 2.0 PCI card, which I
referred to, comes with the drivers for Windows 98SE, which the
original poster said he had.

The Belkin CD installs two USB 1.1 OHCI controllers and one USB 2.0
EHCI host controller. Are these what you refer to as the KEY? Or
does Belkin make the assumption that the KEY is already in place for
98SE?

Yes, all seems ok now.

For some reason it was detecting a 'Composite USB Port'.

What I think sorted it was going into to Safe Mode, then DevMan, deleting
all the USB stuff, including the 'Composite USB Portt and starting again but

All worked fine.

Win9x does not have USB drivers for most connected devices, and if a
device is connected without a driver, the OS will just pick some device
from a hat even before the hardware wizard starts. USB device drivers
must be installed before the device is connected the first time. When
this problem arises, it is best to boot to safe mode and remove
everything from there and start over.
