USB port issue

Hi everyone,
I have a confusing issue with my usb 3.0 ports on my PC. the case is a corsair 500r.
Both of the front usb ports supply power to any device I connect but the computer does not read the devices (hdd's, microphones etc.)
What could be the problem, I am stuck. Please help

What operating system do you have??
i dont know about the microphone but the next time you plug in your external hard drive,go to device manager and see under Universal Serial Bus Controllers if one of them shows a yellow triangle

i dont know about the microphone but the next time you plug in your external hard drive,go to device manager and see under Universal Serial Bus Controllers if one of them shows a yellow triangle

I am using windows 8.1 (64bit).. There are no yellow triangles :/... and my eHDD is powered on.

do they work if you plug them in the back? i had this issue where my headphone didnt work,,i had to go to the VIA HD audio deck and change the HD audio front panel to AC97 Front panel,,and then it worked

Yeah. It's all good in the back.. I have tried downloading drivers and stuff but with no joy.
