USB ports acting up

Hey, so I've had a lot of problems with my USB ports over the past year. I have an MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon, and the newest problem is that when I boot into windows, only my USB 3.1 port works. To get the 3.0 and 2.0 ports working, I've had to disable the Intel USB 3.0 controller and re-enable it upon every boot. Ant thoughts?

PS- I think its odd that my USB 3.1 controller is ASMedia, while the 3.0 controller is Intel. ASMedia makes the USB drivers for my mobo, but reinstalling them does not override the Intel 3.0 controller.

one thing to check as it happen to older asus mb and apple products. the apple products pulled more power then the intel chipset usb ports could handle a few years ago cauing mb to lock up or the ports to reset in a reset loop. i would unplug everything but keyboard and mouse at post see if the older ports work fine. may have a bad usb device or cable that causing a short.

ASMedia's drivers don't "override" Intel's drivers, they only support the ASMedia chip and don't give a damn about the Intel ports as the ASMedia drivers don't cover Intel's PCIe IDs and wouldn't touch Intel's ports with a ten feet pole. You need the ASMedia drivers to get full support for the ASMedia chip and Intel's drivers for the chipset's built-in ports.

So what do I do then? MSI's website has an intel chipset driver for my board. but during the installation process, it says a newer version is already installed. I have installed, and reinstalled, the ASMedia drivers in every way possible, but nothing fixes this.

You said your problems are with the Intel-based ports. Reinstalling ASMedia's drivers will do you no good with those as ASMedia's drivers DO NOT support Intel's ports. If you want to try re-installing drivers to fix your chipset (Intel) ports issues, try re-installing Intel's HCI drivers. (You usually get those lumped together with Intel's chipset drivers.)

Okay, but as I stated before, the chipset drivers on MSI's website is flagged as an older version than the current one I have installed. This might be because I used Intel's driver updating page to try and fix the problem last week. Should I stick with the ones on Intel's website, or go ahead and install MSI's older version?

If you uninstall the drivers first, you should be able to put older drivers in to see if those help. You may need to disable automatic driver search to prevent Windows from pulling drivers from Windows Update or disconnect your PC from the internet/LAN.
