USB Ports Don't Work.

What can I do to get my USB ports to work on my HP dv8000? All of a sudden, yesterday, they all (4) quit working. I have Windows 7 on this laptop. I've tried changing ports, turning off and back on the laptop, and putting in a flash drive from another manufacturer. Nothing works. This is the only problem with my 7-year-old laptop.

I had the same problem (all of a sudden).

I expanded "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" branch in the device manager. My USB Root Hubs were showing warning symbol.

I just right clicked each of them, chose "Update Driver Software" and in the popup, chose "Search automatically for updated driver software".

Now the warning symbol in my USB Root Hubs disappeared and devices work without any issue.

Or, uninstall the drivers(USB root hubs), restart laptop, windows will automatically assign drivers for it.

Or, do a virus scan in safe mode with networking. See how it works.

Hi, Lonewolf7: First, thank you for trying to help. I really appreciate it. I tried all 3 solutions, and, unfortunately, none of them has worked. Also, before I even started to try the first solution, I took the battery out of the laptop and put it back in, thinking that that might work. It did not.

A friend has told me to try the following site/post on Tomshardware.com: www.tomshardware.com/forum/41785-63-ports-stopped-working-windows. I will go back to that forum and see if I can find something else to try.

Further, this friend has also suggested the following site: windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/tips-for-solving-problems-with-usb-drives. I'll try that, too. If neither of these options works, I'll take this in to the repair shop.

If you Laptop supports USB Boot function, Make a bootable USB OS WinXP or Win7 in another PC Using Novicorp WinToFlash or If you have a USB DVD Drive, or anything USB device that might boot at Startup. You can also Check the Laptop BIOS if the USB device if listed in the Boot Option, therefore your USB Ports are Good, your OLD Win7 OS might have corrupted registry settings. Backup your important files and try to reformat and install Win7.
