USB problem on 8KNXP

I have a trusty USB stick which I have used for the last two years with no
problems.

Today it is suddenly an unrecognized device on each of 4 different USB
sockets connected to my Gigabyte 8KNXP rev 2 motherboard. (Windows XP, SP2)

It works perfectly in my wife's (my old 🙂 ) Gigabyte 8KNXP rev 1
motherboard on her PC.

I have deleted the 'unrecognized device' in device manager. I have rebooted.
I have tried various different USB sockets. None of these work.

The only recent changes to the machine are a new wireless (Logitech) Laser
MX mouse (which is connected to the mouse port) - replacing a MS optical
mouse connected to the same mouse port; and a new LG DVD RW/RAM burner
replacing an older DVD RW burner.

Any ideas?

Is it visible in disk manager?.
Was any software installed with the DVD-RW?.
It sounds as if the system is no longer automatically mounting the
filesystem. Some CD writing packages can cause changes in this area.

Thanks for the quick response...

It doesn't appear in disk manager.

No software was installed with the DVD-RW. I use Nero and assorted other
packages, e.g. Ulead Movie Factory, which I am reasonably happy with. So I
didn't install any of the packages that came with the DVD. I have updated
the DVD firmware to the latest version.

I had a similar problem with an old usb cd writer. What I did was uninstall
everything under the USB controllers in the device manager and rebooted.
Windows reinstalled all my devices including my cd writer. I don't know if
it would work for you, but maybe it will.

Thanks for the help. I tried my usb stick in three other computers today.
All failed to recognise it. I bought a new USB stick and now all is (almost)
well.

The odd thing is, that my old usb stick still works in my wife's pc. So I
have copied off all the files.

And now the front USB socket on my Gigabyte mobo no longer works - for
either old or new; so I'm using the cable from a rear connector (the old
stick doesn't work there either). The new stick is USB 2, so maybe the front
socket only works with USB 1.1. OTOH...

So overall, I think the old USB drive was kaputt. It could have caused
knock-on effects in the mobo circuitry.

My wife's PC no longer boots - not even the BIOS. This could be a
coincidence, but I'm wondering if the USB drive has drawn excess current
from the mobo, and led to its demise.

Any comments welcome.

Hi John

When I was checking out the GA-8ik1100, which is your boards little sister,
I came across a 'recognised' problem with usb and the Intel ICH5R chipset.
I'm afraid I didn't bookmark the page, but with a bit of googling you should
find it. I'm not suggesting that's what your problem is, but IIRC it was
similar.

I'm afraid I was unable to come up with anything relevant. However, thanks
for the suggestion.

I'm buying a new mobo for my wife's pc and I have already bought a new usb
stick. Philosophically (!) I guess the cash always solves the problem!!!
