Hello there i have just bought a new dell dimension 3000 desktop pc, i had a
HP BRIO pc but it was causing a lot of problems when i plugged my modem in
one of the usb ports and a scanner in the other, my modem is an alcatel
speedtouch 330 it takes a lot of power from the USB port and when the
scanner was connected everything slowed down. My old pc had 2 usb ports and
i tried a powered hub but that didn't work and i kept getting no dial
messages!. But with this new dell, am i going to get the same problem i had
with the HP machine or does the dell handle it better?

the Scanner i had was a canoscan also the modem took about 500mw of power (I
am sure that is the right figure)

I Hope you can help how highly do you rate this model anyway?

Kind Regards
Richard

Do you know what version USB you have? 1.0, 2.0.. 2.0 has a much faster data
transfer rate.

Have you tried moving one of the items to another port. I had to do that
with my scanner as it requires 500ma by itself.

I think the speedtouch has been known to take more like 650mw, which is
way above the "second" revision of the USB 1.x spec (1.0 had no max load
IIRC, and 1.1 specified 500mw)

To be brutally honest, you're probably better off getting a cheap router
- I did just under 2 years ago and haven't regretted it - the connection
is more reliable, versatile (i've been able to use it without any
configuration with a new linux install), and as it uses NAT it gives you
a measure of protection against network aware viruses etc. - a router
remembers what information your computer(s) asked for, and will ignore
port probes / attacks from other sources.

I think mine cost me about £27 from ebuyer.co.uk
