Hi,

I've got a Dell Dimension 4550 running WinXPHome. The owners manual says
it has six USB 2.0 ports. It has six USB ports alright, two in front,
and four in back, and I assume they are 2.0, since the device manager
shows an enhanced USB controller. But, I really don't understand all the
USB related items in the device manager. Here's what is shown:

Universal Serial Bus controllers
Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB Composite Device
USB Printing Support
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Why so many? I thought I'd find one Enhanced Host controller, and six
connections, so I don't understand the above.

Is there one for every USB devise I've ever conneted to the machine
(printers, cameras, mice, scanner, etc)? Are they all 2.0?

Thanks for any help,
Bruce

Go into Device Manager and change the view (VIEW button at the top) to
'Devices by Connection' and expand it down (starts at your ACPI
Uniprocessor PC) through the PCI Bus to the USB controllers and you'll see
which hubs are on which controller and then, if you do a properties on the
hub, it'll tell you how many ports it's got and how much power it can provide.

No, but the printing support is for your printer and I'd guess the
composite device is your scanner since I imagine that's what you had
plugged in when you did the list.
