USB Speed all over the place

My backup speed over USB fluctuates wildly. I am using Retrospect backup to a RDX 2Tb disk drive. The backup can have periods of writing 1000 MB/min to the drive and other periods of 10 MB/min or 1.0 MB/min. I have no idea what might be causing the speed to jump all over the place during the hours of backing up hundreds of GB's.

larger files transfer more quickly...; lots of small files are time consuming....
