Hi,

I have a USB 2.0 stick that has stopped working. When I plug it in I get a message saying USB not recognised and when I look in device manager it gives me "error code 43" which basically means that the device drivers aren't loading for some reason. The stick is at least a few years old.

It is definitely the USB stick that is the problem as other memory sticks work and it has been tried on two windows systems and one linux and it hasn't worked on any. From what I can see [without a magnifying glass] the connections on the USB aren't broken and jiggling it around doesn't work. Right now I don't have a soldering iron to redo the connections and see if that works.

I have also tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting but no luck. There are no device drivers available from the manufacturer [Maxell]. I have used some data recovery tools, partition tools etc but they will not work as they need a drive letter.

Is there any way to get it to mount so I can recover the data, as it has a lot of important data on it?Before someone says you should have backed it up - it's not mine and I had previously told this person to have 2 backups of all this work several times but I was ignored. I would like to just say I told you so but this has college work and thesis research on it. I don't think that professional data recovery will be an option due to financial constraints but either way I would like to fix it and expand on my skills.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions or help you can give.

Edit: I have searched for a solution and come across similar problems but in most cases it has been either a problem with the computer or the stick has been a corrupted and needs to be formatted etc.

I have already tried both Test Disk [aka PhotoRec] and Recuva. They wont work [or at least I can't get them to work] because the thumb drive doesn't mount so it's never an option to select it - I just get a choice of my hard drives. If anyone knows how to access a drive that isn't mounted using one of these, please feel free to correct me but I don't it's possible. I have tried Gparted, Find and Mount, Test Disk, Recuva, Ease Us. I don't think that the data is corrupted - I'm pretty sure that if I can get it to mount just once then I will be able to get the data off it. I know that at least some power is getting to the stick because there is a tiny LED on the circuit board that flashes once when I put it in.

No solution so far. I provided Maxell with all the info they asked for and they haven't bothered responding [co-incidentally I don't recommend their products].

Does anyone know if the fault could be caused by a laptop e.g. perhaps some part of the os is corrupted and somehow messed up the drive? The reason I ask is because the same person had another memory stick fail today. Again it was a couple of years old but it wasn't used very often [it was only being used now because the other one failed]. It could be just extreme bad luck that two drives fail so close to each other but I want to explore all avenues.
