Question USB works on external hard drives but not on other devices

Hello!

I have Lenovo Thinkpad L520 laptop and I tried to install windows with USB flash drive but it didn't show up in the boot menu. On boot it shows 'ME is in recovery mode' and I tried to update BIOS and Management Engine but no luck. I've also heard that some people fixed it with CMOS battery change but no luck.

Anyways.. I installed Windows 10 with DVD.

The laptop works normally but anything I connect to USB does not work except external hard drives. I've tried to update all drivers and reset bios settings to default.
I've also tried to look in BIOS for USB settings and still nothing changes. I also tried to downgrade BIOS but it won't let me.

Is there any way to fix this or is this laptop done?

Thanks in advance!

Hey KHOR3S!

  1. Your USB flash drive(s) needs to be made bootable (if trying to install Windows, Microsoft provides tools for doing this)
  2. Secure Boot needs to be disabled in your BIOS, if it's available
  3. If installing a UEFI-compatible OS (like Windows 10), make sure UEFI is enabled; in the case of Win 10, it likely will not work under legacy BIOS (non-UEFI)
