Short version: can I use PC100 memory in a computer that calls for 66 MHz SDRAM?

Long version:
I'm buying RAM for my in-laws for Christmas. They've got an IBM Aptiva 2138 E76 (300 MHz PII), and the specs call for 66 MHz SDRAM. I've found PC100 memory for less (since there's so much more if it out there). Can I use that in this computer?

I think the answer is yes, but I'm not sure.

Yes you can. Its the ecc and registered stuff that might/might not work

Yes you can but there are certain exceptions. check to make sure that the board you wish to upgrade will except the ram you wish to buy. The fact that it is pc-100 is of little consequence, however other factors will determine if it is suitable in the in-laws pc.
Make sure the pc can handle the size of the dimm some have 32 meg per stick limitations.
some require gold contacts

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Be sure to check the nanosecond value, as brand-name computers tend to be very picky on that sometimes.

Find out what mobo it comes with. Before the 350 cpus were not multiplyerlocked. It would run faster if you ran it at 3*100 instead of the default 4.5*66. You may be able to get 2.5*133 (333Mhz) out of it using PC133 ram. This sort of ram is usually cheaper or at least near the price of PC100) and will be more useful for any upgrades

I have an LX board, 66Mhz bus, I have successfully used & combined 66Mhz & 100Mhz memory (128Mb)...
I have now added PC133 memory & removed the 66Mhz memory and it still works fine & has been for the past week...

so definately yes, U can have memory with a higher bus speed in, the Mobo will only run at its fastest setting, SDRAM bus speeds do not alter the physical chip, just how fast it can be accessed...
Just dont try adding slower memory to a computer (ie 66Mhz into a board that runs 100Mhz or faster), this would cause... problems...

Were cookin' now... whoops...
