Hi! This is my first time finding help in a forum so ill try my best to describe the situation and hope you guys can help me!

So i've been using this VERY OLD windows xp machine, which was installed on a hdd, and recently i opened the machine up and give it some cleaning, i dusted everything, replace thermal pastes and replaced the old psu with a new one that i bought.
Once i've put everything together, i turn it on and it posted into the os like normal. But for some reason, when i tried to open up chrome, it froze and the bsod appears (bsod had appeared multiple times in the past), so i restart the machine, and it got into the windows xp loading screen, but after that, the screen was black, then this error appeared:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Beginning dump of physical memory.

I've looked up how to fix this error but they all said that you need a windows xp cd to boot into recovery console, which i dont have.
I tried running with safe mode and last good configuration file but neither works, they just have the blue screen with that error again.

Now it got me thinking, is this error only happen to the os? and all the files on the hdd are safe? cause if so, can i use an ssd that i already bought and install windows 10 on it, and use that to boot then go into the xp folders and fix them manually? OR just delete the xp os and use windows 10 from then on?
I've been meaning to upgrade to windows 10 for a while (hence the ssd) but i don't know where to start, cause i still want to use the hdd as storage but idk how to remove xp but still keep the files safe.

so that's the situation i'm in, i hope you guys can help me, i'll answer all questions in the hope of resolving this issue.

Thank you!

yes! thats what i meant to do! its just that im worried that it wont let you boot into windows 10 cause xp is in the way when i plug that xp drive in
Boot order in the BIOS.

Of course, you install Win 10 with only that drive connected.

Or, buy an inexpensive USB dock. $24.

You can turn the XP drive on after Win 10 is up and running. No conflict.
No, don't use a Win 10 that was installed with some other hardware in this ancient XP era PC.
That is guaranteed to not boot up.

There is some hardware fault in the XP machine. Possibly the HDD, possibly something else.
Maybe even just a loose connection after the cleaning out and reassembly.

First, I would reseat the RAM and check all the connections; especially the power supply as it was newly installed, so make sure all the connects are correct. Further, have you already installed the ssd? If so remove or unplug it (and any other drives (ie USB) and try rebooting again. I would also check the BIOS is properly configured, and the boot order is correct.

i have tested these components outside the case once i have cleaned them, and it posted, and got into the os no problem, but after i had put them back in the case, that thing happened. it couldve been a loose wire or something else, yes, but now, with everything properly connected, i cant get into the os, how would i know if my files are safe and which part were faulty?

also i have not yet install windows 10 or anything on the ssd, i meant to use this pc to install it, only now if i were to use the ssd to boot, can i still plug my hdd in and see my files and fix/remove the xp files?

oh and i searched my config online and these pcs that have almost the same config can run windows 10 fine. right now i dont have enough money to build a new pc, and i want to access my files so this pc will have to do for now

and no, i have not install the ssd yet, i want to remove xp from the hdd before doing that, but now i cant get into xp, so im thinking maybe using the windows 10 ssd to get access to the hdd that has xp then fix then remove it from there?

Will a new install of Win 10 work on a drive in that hardware?
Maybe, probably.

Can you fix a broken XP install with a Win 10 install USB? No.

Disconnect the drive with XP on it.
Install Win 10 on a different drive
Later, reconnect the XP drive and recover whatever personal files you can.
