The upgrade probably changed the key and that would explain why its not the correct key. If this an OEM system the product key should be located on a sticker of the system. If its a retail OS use the key that shipped with the disc.

Whaty have you actually done? Did you reinstall Windows 8 and if so, how? Did your existing W8 installation get updated to 8.1 from the Store or direct form the website? When you say Windows "wouldn't accept it", do you mean it fails Activation?
So bignastyid got it right - you should have used Belarc to get the key from the installation before Microsoft messed with it. You need to go through the telephone Activation process to explain what happened and hope they give you a new key to generate a valid PID
