I'm upgrading my computer but I'm not sure what CPU I should go for. A friend of mine is offering to sell his i7 2600 for $200 (it's about three years old) or should I just get the Haswell i5? I have no interest in overclocking.

My current rig is this:
ASrock h61m-vs
I3-2120
Radeon HD 7750
4gb ram
Corsair cx600

I've already decided on a gtx 970 and an extra 4gb of ram but I'm left wondering if it's worth saving money on an older i7. Do I risk becoming outdated by sticking with sandy bridge? I mostly game and do video editing. Thanks.

The single performance of the i7-2600 and i5-4460 is near identical. Thus, gaming performance will be the same.
Multithreaded tasks like video rendering, the i7 with hyperthreading will be faster...

Honestly I would try to get your friend to lower the price of the i7 2600. It's used(over 3 years old now) and when it was new it only cost $300. Usually most people will sell parts for less than half of what they paid for it new. If you could get him down to $130-150, that would be great. 😉

Newer Haswell CPUs are LGA 1150; you have a m/b with a LGA1155. So you're not going to be able use the newer Haswell CPUs anyway.

That being said, ask for a cheaper price on that i7. If you can't get it for < $150, then you might be better off just buying a new m/b with a new CPU.

I know, that's why I'm debating whether to stay sandy or go haswell + new mobo.
Thanks, everyone. I'll try to haggle the price to < $150. My friend can be a bit stubborn though.
