Used wrong ac adapter - now the internet is down

Hello,

I did something dumb which I regret. My parents have had slow internet issues for a long time, and they have a DSL modem from 2004. I thought that I could help them by letting them use my modem instead. So I replaced their modem with my modem, and I heard a low but growing whirrring sound, and then a "click". The new modem didn't work, and then I realized that the old ac adapter was incompatible with my modem because it has different power needs. They are both fried I think. I tried connecting the old modem back to the old ac adapter and it wouldn't work.

Anyways, I went out and bought a new ac adapter that is compatible with their old modem. I plugged it in, and the old modem is powered on like before, but it is not connecting to the internet no matter what we try (not all of the lights are turning green). Could the events I have just described have had any affect on internet service? Or is there something wrong with my parents modem now? This doesn't make any sense to me.

Blowing the power supply on modem A by using it on Modem B can happen for sure.

As for the old one with the new adapter, just make sure the voltage is the same and the current(amps) is the same or higher. the polarity on most of these is center positive. Clearly it has to put out DC if the old adapter did and AC if the old one did.

If the modem has a reset, you may want to try it. If the modem has a router as well, you may need to login and give it the ADSL login/password again as well.

Thanks, Nukemaster. I did reset the modem, using the little pinhole button on the back. It is connected to a wireless router. The modem now has a green light for "Power" red light for "Ready" and nothing for "Ethernet".

What would be the procedure to get the modem working again after a reset? Do I have to go into the web browser using that 192.168.1.1 address and configuring something?

Most ISP's do not give you much access to the modem configuration. You may need to contact your ISP to get all your settings back up as not all modems are the same.

So the modem connects to the wireless routers WAN port right?

If you reset the router as well, you may need to log into it and tell it to use PPoE[point to point over Ethernet - dsl] and give it your login and password for the ISP you use[i am not sure if isp's still use this system, but they may].

You could try a computer right on the modem as well to see what it does.
