I admit that we use pen and paper a lot, but still I prefer scoring
sticks. It gives you more feeling about your winning and losses,
whilst the figures on paper are somewhat abstract.
For a long time I have kept a website to administrate all my mahjong
games (www.martinrep.tk), but I have stopped recording the scores.
That gives me more freedom in using the scoring sticks, and now I
prefer that over the paper.
Only when playing the Chinese Classical type of rules, you better use
the paper, since you run easily out of sticks with scores of 10,000 or
20,000.
I do not think you have to order them in Japan. At least, Japanese
sticks can be bought in my country.
