Using 240hz monitor at 144 for testing

I have a Benq XL2546 and to test if i could feel the difference between 144hz and 240hz i just capped the fps at 144 and the difference was HUGE. Just wanted to ask if the test was pointless or at least somewhat accurate. The monitor gets back to 240 if i change it so i tried that Ty for the answers guys!

No, 144 FPS on a 240 Hz monitor is not the same as operating at 144 Hz, it will be much less smooth due to the mismatched timings.
