Using a 5k Display with a GTX 970?

I have heard of people powering a 5k Display with GTX 980s, but I was wondering if it would be possible to do it with this GTX 970. I wouldn't play any games at that high of a resolution, I was just wondering if it would be possible to power one to use for daily tasks.

Thank you,

From what I remember....

The current Display Port standard only allows for max 4k rez. So yes, anything more needs two connections.

Under the licensing agreements, you can't implement a 'user accessible' DP that falls outside the standards imposed.

Apple overcame these enforced restrictions by not allowing user access to their non-standard DP, which they have over clocked to achieve 5k.

No you can't OC your own DP to get 5k.

1 970 should be able to run a 5k monitor just fine for web, movies and the such. someone confirm?

1. I don't know of any 5k displays other than the apple one.
2. Even the Microsoft surface Pro 3 and run a 4k monitor for office based applications, I'm sure a dedicated graphics card will do it easy.

It can power a 5k display but don't expect to be gaming at that resolution. Performance on the 970 suffers on anything above HD due to the last .5 GB of ram being a 4rth the speed of the rest.

I don't really get the reason of buying a 5k monitor and a 970 together if you aren't going to be gaming. There are plenty of other, cheaper video cards out there if you aren't going to be gaming that will provide the same level of 2d performance..

My 970 works well on 2560x1600 gaming. It will still run older games on 5k without any hassles. I don't mind running newer games on a lower resolution on that monitor.

Display Support:
Maximum Digital Resolution:
5120x3200

The website says with dual display port connectors.
Would that be the only way of doing it?

I have a 970 and it lags in skyrim at 2560x1080. It's not really a matter of opinion, the 970 will lag when it starts to access those last .5 GB.

It's not really a factor as any 5k monitor is going to come with Dual-Mode Display port. So long as you have a decent video card, you're fine.

Strange, I have a 970 as well and doesn't fall short of 60 fps on any of my games that I play on 2560x1600. I have a nice stable overclock on it, but I don't believe that would make too much of a difference.

Have your tried pushing it to use that last 3.5 GB of RAM? I have a fully modded skyrim and when it ticks over the 3.5 Vrma usage threshold, it starts to stutter.
