Using a computer as a router

Here lately my router hasn't been reliable for wifi calling. Atleast I feel it may be the router. Well I've been looking at routers and I see some have a built in dual core. So I was wondering if it'd be smart to setup a server with a wireless card to be the router. I don't have any LAN devices in the house so it could work. But is this practically ?
Also the server is my home media center so it would cut out a middle man for sharing my network folder right?

No need of doing that, download connectify or virtual router.

Routers are purpose devices with chips that are designed for the task.

I understand your logic that using an even more powerfull desktop cpu would be even better but in practice it is really not better. Companies with many computers run DHCP and DNS from servers but leave the actual Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions of a router to a router.

I would highly suggest you to just replace the problematic router.
