Using a GTX 770 2gb with 525w psu

Hi, i have a dell precision t3500 with a xeon x5647 and a 525 watt dell psu. i want to put my gtx 770 2gb card in it. the problem is that my psu does not have a 8pin pcie connector. is it ok if i just plug a 6pin in the 8pin connector on the gpu? the gpu has a tdp of 220 watts, pci slot delivers 75, 2 6pins deliver 150w which equals 225 watts. it should be fine right? i have already checked how much power the system consumes on pcpartpicker and its 478 watts in total with the 770. on the psu it says +12vA 18a +12vB 18a +12vC 18a +5v 20a +3.3v 20a -12 0.5 A +5vsb 4A

The gpu needs the 8 pin connector or they would have built it with a less expensive 6 pin connector.
I do not advocate using a molex to 8 pin adapter either.

Then, dell will not supply a premium psu so you may not get the 525w that it advertises.
The psu is only warranted to run the parts that originally came installed.
Your big danger is that if the psu should fail under load, it may not have the protective circuitry to protect your other parts from damage.

i dont trust it not all 80+ psus are good thats more a advertising thing
a gtx 770 at minimum needs 550W i think and if you had a extremely high quality 525w unit then maybe but yours is not one and will definitely not run a 770 safely

Its a Delta made PSU.
Its a fairly solid unit , 500w capacity on the 12v.
I don't really advocate the use of adapters but that unit is capable of running a 770 with your Xeon IMO.

Its just a pity that you didn't get a card with the standard twin 6 pin sockets.

Try a 6+6 (one in the 8 pin socket) , it may work , it may not - it certainly won't damage anything though IMO.

and if tis just 80+ with 525 means that its not the safest to run system over 75% of the wattage

It has the capability to run a 770 no doubt but the biggest factor is age - that unit must be 5-7 years old & that would be my biggest doubt personally.

its actually only around 3-4 years and i do have a dual molex to 6 pin adapter lying around. do you think that it would work plugging the 6pin into the 8 pin? the pci slot gives 75 and 2 6pins 150 which equals 225 watts and the card has a 220 watt tdp.
