Hi guys,

I recently purchased a monitor to connect to my laptop, an alienware aw2210. I want to connect my headset to the ports on the display, but when I do, I get no sound / computer does not recognize mic. Does anyone have any ideas of what is going on? The monitor works fine, via an hdmi - hdmi cable ( I have also tried an hdmi - dvi). The sound seems to work fine coming from the laptop, but the headset just doesn't work. I have installed all the applicable drivers.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't think your idea will work. From what you've described, there's no way for the mic sound to get back to the computer. The HDMI cable can send sound to the monitor (as long as you set your laptop to do so), but the computer isn't expecting sound to come back that way (I think normally only things like the EDID are sent from the monitor to the computer). Why do you want to connect your headset to the monitor instead of the laptop anyway?

Well, I figure since the monitor has audio input / output, it should be able to produce sound right? I want to use the monitor outputs since my laptop has no mic out, therefore leaving me without a mic. I was hoping I could use my monitor as a mic input.

Edit: Why would the ports be there if they cannot be used?

It seems weird to me as well that it would have a separate audio input when it doesn't have built-in speakers, but my guess would be that the audio input is so that one computer connected to the DVI as well as the audio input can share the audio output with one or two other computers connected to the HDMI port (which already carries the audio), reducing the need for extra speakers. The audio out should work with an HDMI to HDMI cable from your laptop, you might just need to configure it to use that for the audio.

I also find it strange that your laptop has no microphone jack. I've got a Compaq Presario notebook that's at least five years old, and it has both a headphone jack and a microphone jack. However, if you've got a spare USB port on your laptop, you can use a usb headset adapter, like this one:

Thanks a lot for your input. My laptop has a built in mic, which is really bad quality 🙁. I would configure the lcd audio, but it doesn't show up in any of the windows configs.
