Hi

I am a newbie with NAS drives so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a Seagate Personal Cloud which recently died on me. I managed to removed the 3Tb NAS hard drive from the enclosure. I recently purchased a QNAP TS-251 and wanted to know if I was to load my seagate NAS HDD into it, would I lose my 1.7TB of data? Or is there any way to read the data already on this drive without losing it?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

You will not be able to read data on the drive by using the QNAP.

try connecting the drive to an internal SATA port and try booting off a Linux Live CD/USB to access the data.

It might be that the Personal Cloud uses a special format or encryption in which case you won't be able to read the data.

Thanks for your advice Emerald.

I have a SATA Drive USB dock. Will that read the data from the drive as long as I am booting of a Linux Live OS?

Sorry if the question sounds stupid. I am relatively new to the world of NAS!

Thanks again for your reply Emerald!

I initially used an Orico SATA3 Dock. It picked up the drive as a 4.18gb drive when the drive is actually 3TB.
I assumed this was because the dock only supports NAS drives with up to 2TB of capacity.
I then tried a different Orico SATA3 Dock with USB-C with support for NAS drives of up to 8TB.
This time though the drive did not show up.
I have been trying to use the dock under Mac as I don't use a Windows machine.
