I have a mobo with a "double decker" U.2 connector. I guess this is also called SFF-8639? What is the easiest way to use this to connect an M.2 SSD or "normal" 2.5" SATA 3 SSD?

It looks like I have to buy either;
a) a cable that converts the double decker U.2 to a flatter connector and then a 2.5" case to put the M.2 stick in that has the flat U.2 connector on the outside
b) A cable or dongle that converts the double decker U.2 to a flat U.2 and then another cable or dongle that adapts the flat U.2 connector to the SATA 3 connection on the 2.5" SSD.

Neither of which seems very efficient or that it would work.

Is there nothing that allows me to more directly connect a common SATA 3 SSD or M.2 SSD NVMe stick to a U.2 "double decker" port? I see devices that go the other way; plugging a U.2 device into an M.2 port.

I suppose my bese option is just to use one of the mobo SATA 3 ports and ignore the U.2 port?

In practice U.2 is used only on 2.5" SSDs. Several enterprise SSD and server platform suppliers support the U.2 form factor.

Cable:
Funtin U.2 (SFF-8639) to HD Mini-SAS (SFF-8643) Cable Support All Vendor's 2.5'' NVMe SSD, Manufactured by Amphenol is available for about $30 on Amazon.

Here is a 400GB drive you can use with the above cable:
