Using a VGA splitter to duplicate screen

I have bought a VGA splitter and I just wanted to confirm that the computer can only detect one screen when using a VGA splitter? There is no software or program that could possibly detect two?
I am connecting it to spy on someone but dont want them to be able to detect it as they have a feeling I am doing something along those lines.

Is there any other way that it can be done as well? I do not want to extend just duplicate.
