Using an old hard drive with a new build

I've got my friend's old gaming rig that has everything except a hard drive.

Instead of buying a new hard drive and a new os can I just install an old hard drive running windows xp? What kind of configurations would I have to do?

You'd have to un-install all the drivers first, then more than likely need to do a repair install.

Imo, just back up the old HDD and do a fresh install.
