USING D-Link Ethernet Switch Via ADSL router

I had a 4 port an ADSL router with wireless. i wanna do use D-Link 10/100Fast Ethernet Switch for more computer, i could not connect through my D-Link switch. is there any special form of cabling and specific setting required to use my switch... your answer will be appreciated... many thanks...

What model switch?

Some switches have a Uplink port, some support auto uplink, and others you might need a crossover cable.
