I hope this question isn't too basic, or shows my lack of computer understanding too much. When you buy RAM, can you use one 4GB stick and one 8GB stick for your system, or should they both be the same storage amount?

I'm building my first PC and trying to stay within a budget. I've been told to go with 16GB of total RAM rather than 8, but the cost is rising quickly. I plan to use the computer for web surfing, basic programs like Office, simple video editing (like, very basic), and for video conferencing for work. No real gaming use. Could I go with two 4GB and then replace one with an 8GB in the future if I need to?

It is not recommended, but yes, you can do that. Just consult your motherboard manual for the slots to use. It should work fine. Also make sure whatever RAM you get, its all the same speed and frequency, this will provide better compatibility.

Mixing sticks can be problematic, especially different sizes, if you cide to do so and have any problems, give me a shout, can generally get sticks to play with slight voltage and/or timing adjustments 😉
