Question Using Display Driver Uninstaller and Internet Connection- Swapping from a 3070 to a 4070

I plan to swap from a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Eagle to an Asus RTX 4070 TUF eventually, to avoid dealing with Gigabyte's problems, but I feel like it would be smarter for me to use DDU, since I have 2 drivers for the 3070 installed on this pc that were released before April, and I would rather get rid of them in case they clash with the 4070 drivers.

to be honest, I've never really used DDU before but I know that it is advised to use it in Safe Mode, but I also read that you should disconnect from the Internet as well; however, whenever I try to look into the reasoning, it always comes up with AMD-based problems. I'm aware AMD and Windows have a weird issue with Windows replacing the drivers all the time and I assume it is advised to disconnect from the Internet to prevent Windows from auto-installing a different driver, but is this necessary for Nvidia?

do people recommend disconnecting your Internet connection due to the AMD-Windows problem, or is that something you should for an Nvidia GPU as well? because I haven't personally seen ANY Nvidia user with the whole "Windows replacing drivers at random" issue. will I need to do this as well, switching from a 3070 to a 4070? I plan to install Driver Version 531.61 first, rather than the direct latest driver, since 531.61 is the release/support driver for the 4070. although if anyone knows of a better, more recent and stable driver for the 4070, I'd be happy to know

side question: if I do have to disconnect my internet, I have an Ethernet connection; would it be effective to just turn off my router before using DDU? would that be enough to disconnect my internet connection and safely use the uninstaller?

Just use safe mode for DDU tool to completely remove and reinstall the GPU drivers. No need to disconnect from the internet.

It is NOT mandatory to disconnect your PC from the Internet while using DDU. There is also an alternative option in the menu of DDU that you can select which should prevent the download of drivers from window update.

alright, thank you. if you don't mind answering a bit of an unrelated question about the 4070;

I have a 5800x with Eco Mode 65w enabled and a B550-F motherboard (32gb ram and 1000w PSU so I believe my rig is good to go there) but to my understanding, the 4070 is mainly meant for 1440p?

my monitor is only 1920x1080, which is the only resolution I've ever played on. will the 4070 still be ok, and outperform my 3070, or will I noticeably tank my performance. basically: is it fine to stay on 1080p with the 4070, and a 5800x with Eco Mode, or will it be "too strong"? as long as it doesn't cause stuttering or massive issues, I can live with it

At 1080p (1920x1080) it's CPU that takes the brunt of the load but it's not all about resolution, higher monitor frequency and high detail settings in game favor GPU. That of course depends on particular game.
Only reason to choose 3070 over 4070 would be to save some money now, 4070 is not much better performance wise but also newer generation which may be actual longer.

I've just got my eye on the 4070 in case my 3070 has any issues; it's a Gigabyte card so it's unpredictable these days, their issues tend to pile up and this card is pretty new

so in case I need to get a new gpu, I'll probably try and snag a 4070. I've heard the 4070 has pretty good power consumption too compared to the 3070; not sure if that's a general 40 series thing, but it would be nice to get a new gen card with good handle on its power. downside like you said, is the price

Hello!

You might not need to use DDU at all.
You could simply access the Control Panel & uninstall the nVidia driver; then restart the PC; then install the new driver.

DDU should only be used if the normal uninstall process isn't working.

Honestly speaking, I NEVER used DDU on my system for a reinstall/uninstall of the GPU drivers.

Even when I had an Nvidia GPU installed, before getting an AMD card, I just completely removed the NV drivers from the control panel, and then inserted the AMD GPU on my mobo after a reboot/system shutdown, and then installed the AMD drivers.

I never faced any issues while swapping GPUs as well. DDU should only be used when there is a driver corruption on the system.

That's just the point of DDU existence. it removes all the parts, traces of and settings of drivers unlike uninstalling from control panel or device manager.
On the other hand, changing GPU from Nvidia to AMD and vice versa is not a must as they are totally different and will cause no problems but just leave a bunch of unnecessary files on disk.

I went ahead and used DDU, didn't fix what I was aiming to fix (negligible stutter, dw about it) but now I've got Nvidia Ansel telling me I can use keys to activate it when launching a game. other than that, not much else changed

I can't disable it the normal way because 531.29, just like all other recent drivers, seem to be DCH only, so the Ansel file isn't where it used to be. I just don't want this to cause any fps issues or clashes, but as long as it doesn't do that, then we're fine

weirdly, turning off overlay in GeForce doesn't stop Ansel from notifying me of its existence. although closing GeForce and NVCP does stop the notification from cropping up

Hello!

You could try uninstalling the current driver, and install the nVidia Studio driver instead.

I just ended up installing the Nvidia Profile Inspector app and disabled Ansel through that. although I'm now wondering if I can safely uninstall the Profile Inspector without reactivating Ansel, since I don't want to risk getting banned in my main games like Destiny 2 and Monster Hunter World
