Using existing coaxial cable to get wired network connection to my second story.

Basically, I would like to get a wired internet connection from my basement where the router is to my room on the second story of my home. There is a coaxial cable that runs from the basement to my room, and I am hoping I can use that somehow.

Would I be able to simply connect another router to the wall outlet in my room upstairs and have that work fine? Or is there another method I could use? The goal is to avoid having to install an etherenet cable.

I have some decent networking knowledge from taking college courses, and would feel comfortable doing some more complicated stuff on the software side.

Thanks,
Vaughn B.

It would make sense that there would be a way to transmit Ethernet over coax, considering it was done with Thinnet way, way back. But a quick search shows that RJ-45 to coax F is stupidly expensive, 100-200USD per unit, and you need at least two.

I know you want to avoid running a cable, but if the existing coax cable is there, you might find a pull cord you can use to pull a Cat6 (or Cat7 if you think you need the shielding) cable through with minimum fuss, and you'll bypass the 100Mbps limit of the coax converters and be GigE ready.

Thanks guys.

As a follow up, though, can you direct me to some sort of tutorial (a YouTube video, maybe) to pull Cat6 through the wall using a pull cord like Saberus said so I can see if it is a viable option for me?

You can only use a pull cord if it was installed when the house was built. You might be able to use the coax to pull ethernet if it was installed later but if it was installed correctly it will be fastened inside the walls.

If you wanted to go say from a unfinished basement to the first floor you might be able to drill up into a wall. Going up 2 stories is going to be a massive undertaking.

The only simple way to do it is like the cable company does their. You drill out the side of the house, run the wire outside and drill though the wall on the second story back in. Most people will not accept wire on the outside of the house.

In any case it is a lot of work and if you pay someone they likely will charge you $500 for a 2 story pull. I would agree with the MoCA recommendation,.

First, buy $500 worth of tools....
Seriously, though...a video tutorial wouldn't be much help, because every installation is different. And going up 2 floors will be a REAL pain.
