[SOLVED] Using Gen4 NVMe on non-PCIe 4.0 Board

Hi all,

My friend decided to build his own PC but one part at a time. I figured I'd lend him some or my old components until he's got all of his parts.

So I suggested to buy an SSD first so that he won't need to worry about transferring files later on.

He'd like to get a 4th Gen NVMe but the board I'm lending him doesn't support it (B350).

Will it still run?

I guess my writing was a bit ambiguous, but my friend will buy his own M.2 NVMe and I will supply him with my old hardware, which consists of a 2200G, mobo, RAM, PSU, and case.

And when he gets all his new parts, he'll have to do an OS reinstall anyway. No matter what drive it is on.

Oh I see... So is this restricted to M.2 or NVMe drives?

Because I did this using a Sata SSD and it worked without issues and without having to reinstall.

No, it is ANY drive type. HDD, SSD, SATA, NVMe....

With a Windows OS and new motherboard, there are 3 possible outcomes:

1. It boots up just fine
2. It fails completely
3. It boots up, but you're chasing issues for weeks/months

Win 10 is better than previous versions, but by no means 100%.
In your previous case, you found either #1 or #3.
