Hi I'm building a very cheap "gaming pc" for a friend using some leftover parts I had laying around and I'm buying a gt 740 for only £22 but found out that even though its a 67w card or still requires a 6 pin so was wandering since it will only need to use the 6 pin if the card requires over 75w so as long as my friend doesn't overclock it should be fine?????
Cpu:i3 4130
Hdd:2tb (not sure what type I just know my friend at a 2tb hdd he will be able to use he didn't tell me what model)
Gpu:gt 740
Psu:400w off brand 18a on 12v

The GDDR3 versions don't need it. As a surprise to me, it appears that the GDDR5 versions do. So again, it depends on the specific version you're getting.

At any rate, you can only hope that the molex adapter doesn't fry any of the other components.

What is the model number of the GT740? I find it hard to believe that it requires a 6-pin PCIE power cable.

As for the adapter, I don't like it, but it should be ok in the short term. Replace the power supply as soon as possible.

I don't like them either but since it won't use it unless you overclock it should be okay also all gt 740 have them look at the specs herehttps://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-740/specifications it says that it requires 1x6 pin
