First off, I'm not 100% sure this would be in the right section, it just seemed most relevant.

This is probably a really odd request, but it makes sense to me, and seems like it would be very useful if this is possible. SO, I have my gaming PC that I recently built, and I'm starting to get into YouTube. Well, I have my 21.5" iMac to do my video editing... We all know I could record my gameplay to an external hard drive, then swap it over to my mac for quick editing. What I would like to do is use a USB File Transfer Cable, hook up the two computers, and directly record onto the hard drive on the iMac. I've never used a USB File Transfer Cable before, and I always assumed that it would just show the other computer as if it is an external hard drive. Is this is case, could I use that, or would I need to use a different method?

PC: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
MAC: OSX Yosemite

Let me know if you would need more information on the build or the iMac.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

you know this is what NAS storage units or file servers are for. i could see you networking two windows pcs to share files like this, i have to admit i'm not enough of a mac user to know if what you're asking is possible. I suspect it would be possible if you set up a windows VM on the MAC... not sure how else to make it work. someone else more familiar with macs might give you a better answer.

Hmm, I didn't think about doing a NAS. You think I would be able to directly to record to the NAS without it effecting my online gaming experience though? considering it would be constantly uploading while I'm recording.... Maybe I'll just have to do the external hard drive thing. It's not that big of a deal considering the iMac is on the same desk as my PC, so it's literally within arm's reach, I wouldn't even have to move my chair or out of my chair or anything to do it.. I just wanted to be lazy and record directly to my Mac cause I know I'll have to transfer the data onto my mac anyway. I don't like to work with editing from an external hard drive without having a copy on the PC.. Especially since the external HDD I have is fairly old.. About 3-4 years old now.

yeah, it wouldn't affect your online gaming.

really a home NAS would be the best option to do this, however it's also going to cost you a few hundred bucks... so again, that's your choice. Simply uploading to an external hard drive and then plugging that into your mac will do a pretty good job too, for a lot less $$ then a NAS will run you.

Yeah, I'll probably just stick to the external hard drive, just everytime I unplug it ill have to go back into shadowplay and set the place to save videos again. I'm gonna eventually buy the usb file transfer cable, cause I get them for super cheap on a discount where I work, and if the USB cable works, I'll post that up on here to let the world know.

I am about to try this.

And I didn't say it was inferior, I just already have the iMac and iMovie is way easier than any other program that I've ever used (Movie Maker, Adobe Premier, Adobe After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro, and a few others). And I only it need it for simple tasks.

Technically my gaming PC is much more powerful, but iMovie is the shiz.
