Hi All, I have a HP pavillion laptop which is having display issues(strange jellyfish like circles appearing , stuck mouse , part of screen jumping up down etc) I have a windows 7 pc lenovo all in one , which has display broken. I have purchased external display monitor and wifi keyboard mouse . Can I take out PC hdd ( I have external usb HDD sleeve) and connect it to laptop and boot and use from it?How exactly?

Thanks

Which laptop and desktop models?
Laptops used to have a 2.5" HDD SATA disk.
But lately they could have a 2.5" HDD or 2.5" SDD or M.2 disk.
For you to be able to use the HDD from a desktop in a laptop it has to have the same interface and size.
Some slim desktop could have a 2.5" SATA disk.

Since those two system are different, you will also have to perform a clean Windows installation.

No no i don't intend to use desktop hdd in laptop. I have external usb casing wherein i can put desktop hdd , connect it to laptop as external drive. Now since windows 7 is installed on that hdd can i boot my laptop from it.?

No, for multiple reasons.

  • Win 7 installed on a drive in a different machine is unlikely to boot up with the laptop.
  • Using an external drive as the OS needs special setup from the beginning. Non-trivial to do.

You can't just take a drive from some other system, connect it via USB, and expect it to work.
It won't.

Oh, so I am left to use the pc hdd as an external storage drive I guess.

By the way , the desktop which is lenovo all in one , none of the usb ports are working , so i cannot use the wifi keyboard mouse or any other usb device. Its got only one serial port so either keyboard or mouse at a time. I was using wifi mouse app, but since i changed my wifi router , suddenly it is not connecting to wifi(tplink) it keeps asking 8 digit pin which when i input doesn't connect. Strange. Time to take out hdd and junk the pc?
