Hello all,

Sorry if this is a stupid Q. but I've currently got a 22" LCD monitor which runs fine. A friend has just upgraded his TV and so gave me his old 37" Panasonic Viesa Plasma TV. This TV is great, but it's about 10 years old and only has 1 HDMI port for example.

The problem is I hooked up the TV via the HDMI cable but the picture looks rubbish and the text is blurry at full HD resolution, 1980x1080. I've seen it run full HD films etc. in the past so I know it can. It states the screen's native resolution is 1280x720 in display settings, but in the TV manual and in the CCC settings it states the monitor's max. resolution is 1980x1080 and the max. refresh rate is 60mhz, which is what I'd like it on.

I have tried to play games but they display at 1280x720 and a higher res. isn't listed as an option. It seems that I can either have a full HD screen or a 60hz refresh rate but not both. I've tried fiddling with settings on my (new) video card and the TV itself but so far nothing has worked. Can anyone help me fix this problem please?

Yes you are correct. The PC mode would indeed use the VGA port as the input. You can definitely use a DVI/VGA adapter. I don't know if this would help your refresh rate issue, but on many TV's, using PC mode helps with the screen borders because a lot of times the aspect ratios of TV's doesn't play nice with the output from a computer. I would give that a shot
It's a Panasonic TH-37PV5008. I've tried to look the model up on internet but can find hardly anything, maybe cos it's 10 years old now lol. Still, it's supposed to be able to handle full HD and a 60hz refresh mode, so I'd just like that setting to work with my PC if possible. :)

i think you cant have both full hd at 60hz because back in the day when it was released, 720p itself was a big deal.. so ppl didnt care abt the 60hz refresh rate.. you will have to sacrefice one or the other.. i suggest you play at 720p.. because sacrificing 60hz sucks...

as of the blurry text, go to start and type "clear type text".. use that program.. it will tweak the text issue
i hope it helps

I just saw this reply. I was going to suggest the same thing about the 1080 resolution @ 60 Hz but looked up HDMI 1.0 and don't see that limitation. However, now that I think about it, it probably is a limitation by the TV itself and not the port.

I agree with choosing the 720 resolution @ 60 Hz over the 1080 resolution @ 30 Hz refresh rate.

yeah man, thnx

Many thanks for the advice so far. I think you guys may well be right. :) New Q. The TV has a PC mode, but it's a VGA port. If I try a DVI to VGA adapter cable between my TV and PC would this give me any benefit? I think this is the only way I can select my TVs PC mode, as whenever I plug in my HDMI cable my PC channel is blank, I assume because I'm not using the VGA PC port I have?
