Using seagate backup plus slim to record tv programs

How do I use my seagate backup slim plus as a means of recording tv stations I've connected it via us but it just keeps saying it's write protected I've tried formating it but no joy I just want to record programs so I don't miss them

Perhaps your recording App has issue writing to external?
