Using server as router

Im tiered of my Motorola surf board router, and was wondering how to set up a server as a router and getting rid of my surf board. I would like to have more controle over my network and I would also like to limit the bandwidth each computer gets. I would also like to know wich server to use, one is a hp DL360 G3 with windows server 2003 and can be upgraded to 2008. The other is a desk top that I installed server 2008 and only has one network card.

2003 or 2008 will work, you will just have to make sure what ever you use as the server has 2 network cards.
If it's a home network you might want to check out, tomato, it's a firmware replacement for Linksys routers

I'm running server 2008 r2 on some old hardware (photo of my system at bottom of this: http://www.easy-home-networking-guide.com/Home-Networking-Server.html )

It certainly is robust. But I think it is overkill for home use.

I've been wondering about ClearOS ( http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html ) , which appears to offer good routing capabilities and edge protection. Have you looked at that?

I'm sorry I'm mostly a windows guy, I have heard good things about ClearOS though, but the only Linux distro I've played with is Ubuntu.

I know Windows does have a routing function.
If you type ipconfig /all you see this part at the top

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

If you set IP routing enabled it will act as one

I have heard about ClearOS, but havent really used it. From what I've researched I think your right about ClearOS being the best for routing. Is it easy to use?
