I am trying to use the my laptop drive (which has Win10) as an external drive to move data into the laptop

So basically I take the C: drive out from the laptop and put it in USB enclosure.

Take the USB enclosure to another computer (also win 10) and copy folder FolderA with file Z.txt on the drive at C:\SomeFolderName\FolderA\Z.txt

Then I take the drive out of the USB enclosure and put the drive back on my laptop and start the laptop.

When I navigate to the location C:\SomeFolderName\FolderA, I get the message below and the folder disappears
"Location is not available is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted. - OK

And sometimes the folder is not even there.

Is there some setting that I am overlooking or should I be doing it differently or is it just the behavior (some sort of checks that Win 10 is doing) ??

There's another way to do it if you want to use it as an external storage device. You can get enclosures that have built-in SATA interfaces through USB. You plug it into the USB and transfer files that way. Or, you can plug the drive into a different SATA port on the other PC so it mounts like an external drive. I think what's happening is that you are copying folders/files to the root C:\ of the OS, and when you install the drive into the laptop, it can't find the files because it's not in a place where Windows would normally look for them. You need to put them somewhere else. Try copying them to another folder on the desktop in your user account on the drive like "C:\Users\xxx". Anywhere but the root C:\ See if that works.
