Hey TH,

I just moved back home to my parents while I close on my first home of my own. Its awesome because I get to save a few months rent. Not so awesome I have to figure out connectivity in the basement.

They have their own wireless network which I set up for them last year. I have my RT-N560 which I normally use for connectivity. Is there a way to connect my asus router to my desktop and use it as my wireless access point to hit my parents network? I know there should be a way to bridge the two but normally I would just plug the second router into another ethernet port in the house and sync the networks. I need the router to act as an access point. Thanks for the help

The Asus RT-N56u is a nice 802.11n router. However, it looks like it can only act as a router, and not function as a repeater.

You have a few options. The ideal would be to run Ethernet cable down to your location in the basement. Then plugin the router, which should be set to run as an Access Point as there really should only be one router on a home network to avoid conflicts.

You can also see if you have a wifi signal in your basement. If this is adequate, a USB wifi adapter plugged into your computer may provide enough of a connection.

The final option is to get a Powerline kit to get a wired signal into the basement, and then you can plug your router, configured as an Access Point into that.

Yeah after some internet browsing this is the same solution ive come to. Thanks so much for the advice. Do you have any options for decent repeaters? In my new place I would like to add another router or get a booster for the RT-N56U.

What do you recommend then? If i want to boost the signal in my home?

Basically, anything other than a repeater- it is really the last option.
