Hi,

I have a pair 4 GB kingston ddr3 dimms and am going to upgrade to the G Skill Ripjaws kit 16 GB (2*8GB). 1600MHz. And I am wondering if I can just plug the new ones into the 2 and 4 slots without having to remove the old ones (for a total of 24 GB) on my my mobo, which is an asus m5a78l-m/USB3. I know it's overkill just figured why wouldn't I if there's no downsides. 16<24 after all.

Solution
Check timmings and speeds. If both are CL9-9-9-24 1.5V or something similar (still both same timings, power and speeds) then they SHOULD work.
you will get ~90% chance it will boot and work. ~5% for wired shit errors, rest for simple no boot. Try it (remember pairs matter), place bigger in 1-3 slots and smaller in 2-4.
