Is it possible to use my old pc's 500gb sata 3gbs 7200rpm(vista) plug it into a different computer, reformat it, then install with new homebuilt pc and new win7 os as main hard drive? Or must I buy primary hd or ssd and install it as second.

I can easily back up data on hard drive onto external, losing all data is no problem. Thanks in advance.

Solution
This will be no problem. The best way is during the Windows install, when it gets to the disk formatting portion, select the Advanced button. This will pop up a few more icons below. One will be a red X. Click each of the partitions above one at a time followed by the red X until all are gone. You can then proceed with a normal install.
