i bought an USRobotics External Modem today. ive always used internal in the past. does it connect to the same spot as a printer? im just curious because i plugged mine in to that spot and XP was not detecting it at all.

It should either connect to a serial port or a USB port, but not a parallel port.

Shut down the computer and connect the modem to your preferred port. Make sure the modem is turned on ... your computer will not detect it, otherwise. Then boot the machine. After you reach the GUI, install the latest drivers for the modem.

If the system still doesn't detect the modem, and you used a serial port, you may have one or more of the ports disabled in the BIOS. You should also check to see if your USB ports are enabled.
