Ok, played a little, then decide to bench before turning in (for the morning).

I found that the Flyby doesn't work, and just sits motionless during demo, (which is says in the readme [missed that]);
<i><font color=purple>Flybys don't work, why?
- Because there's no flyby path for that map in the Demo version of UT2004
- The Botmatch test is VERY CPU dependant!!! The Flyby will be the REAL.</i></font color=purple>

I will mention the night's sporting event to give it my typical benching feel. While pondering what Schumacher's win in Melbourne means for F1 this season I ran the following benchmark.... 😎

So keeping that in mind, and you guys know my system specs, so here's the results of my first run;

I don’t want to sound like a wet blanket but this is still the UT2003 engine with some minor engine enhancements addition game modes and weapons. Benchmarking this demo theoretically shows nothing other than... don’t know doesn’t show anything more than what UT2003 showed you.

I was once a die hard Unreal player myself and what they have done to the series is actually quite annoying. What does a tank have to do with a DM session?

Funny, I didnt see a tank in deathmatch on the demo.

Benchmarking this demo theoretically shows nothing other than... don’t know doesn’t show anything more than what UT2003 showed you.

If you want to be so negative, then get the hell out of here. Yes the code is primarily the same, but pixel shader 1.1 <b>and</b> 1.4 have been used more extensively in thing's like flames and terrain.

Oh so now I am being negative or am I being more objective? Tough call I suppose. Either or the game is basically the same they just touched things up a bit and added modes that should have been in UT2003 to begin with.

Also the pixel shading isn’t that great of a deal with considerations they don’t use all that much and the engine isn’t even a 100% build around DX8-9 standards. It’s just a static mesh rendering, high triangle throughput, high rez supporting, Karma physics based DX7 game.

It’s nothing fantastic or overwhelming different. If you take that as being negative and want to tell me to get the hell out of your "zone" then so be it. I’m simply stating the game is more hype than anything, something you don’t need to have sleepless nights over that’s for sure.

Well, i mean i was looking forward to the new game modes and the adding of like ten million levels. I guess that doesn't mean more fun for me.
Although the 3d graphics don't seem any better i noticed the weapon fire seems a lot smoother and nicer. The terrain as well does look a bit better.
Unreal 2 engine will work great for other games in genre's like MMORPGS. The great thing about unreal is usually you don't need a god system to run it smoothly thanks to it's static meshes and usage of 2d intersections. That's definately good for MMORPG's since most of those kids don't care about computers, they only care about their online wife. (don't flame)

45.5k mark? 85 dollars went a long way. So did that extra 15 dollars for cooling my video card.

Honestly now you play all those maps? I’m sorry but as far as UT goes the original did it for me. The game feels franchised.

Also I never criticized the graphics so much as the game play. It doesn’t feel as fast as intense the DM feel is lost to the shiny effect. It saddens me that they approached the game in this manner. But I can respect them at the same time since they are in the business to make money and making titles like EA does it every year is a way to go about it.

It doesn't matter what the engine is, there are alot of games out there based on the Q3 engine that chugg ALOT slower than Q3 because of the added features.

But then again if you can show me how Q3 and the likes of COD are exactly the same and offer nothing in the way of stress-testing, well then have at it!.

I'll have to try your benchmark because back when the demo came out, GW posted a method to benchmark UT2004. I found that I got nearly identical results at any resolution. Very odd results.

Yeah I remember that thread.


The nice thing about this version is that as long as it can find UT2K4 on your system, then it will do everything automatically (including starting UT2K4).

If you read the ReadMe file it mentions that the Botmatches are VERY CPU-dependant. Flyby is supposed to be the VPU-centric test, but it doesn't work with the demo (you can run it, but really, nothing happens in that segment).

No cant say I said that I can say I said the engines were one in the same that’s for sure. Best way to compare logically would be to wait till 2004 hits the shelves and run the same maps on 2003 and 2004 respectively. But since we can’t do that just yet my speculation that the performance would be near identical still stands since there is no evidence on the contrary to contradicts what I think is the case.

As I said before we can’t exactly compare the engine builds for apples to apples can we. Since from my "understanding" the maps available for 2004 aren’t available for 2003, last I checked that is.
